The people who surround me have inspired the most significant aspects of my artistic growth. Instead of turning to nature, I’m drawn to the faces and stories of those who’ve shaped me. It’s truly special to capture their spirit in a painting and share with them how I see their presence in my life.
“A picture is worth a thousand words,” and I believe that’s true. When I look at a photo, I can sense the kind of person someone might be and translate that impression onto paper.
Here’s a great photo I chose to turn into a portrait of my best friend.
Sometimes, when a particular edit is needed, I use a digital collaging technique before drawing to make sure I have the perfect layout.
To create my portrait drawings, I alternate between the grid technique and tracing to establish clean, accurate guidelines before moving into the colouring stage. It feels almost like building my own colouring page as the foundation for the final artwork.
Sometimes, I also begin my sketches digitally so I can make adjustments more easily, then transfer the finished sketch to paper once I’m satisfied with the design.
Using a mix of markers and coloured pencils, I layer in the colours to create depth and bring the portrait to life in my own artistic style.
In this example, I worked with markers and pencil crayons, but I often use watercolour and gouache for my portrait pieces as well.
Depending on the medium I use, my portrait work transforms visually. Right now, I focus on two main styles: stylistic realism and a cartoon–comic-inspired style.
For my stylistic realism pieces, I typically work with gouache and watercolour to achieve soft, natural blending—especially in the skin tones. Usually, I reserve this technique for larger works, as it is more time-saving.
When I’m creating something more cartoony or comic-like, I use alcohol markers, paint markers, and coloured pencils to bring the artwork to life. In this style, I also enjoy keeping a clean outline around the subject to enhance that bold, illustrative look. I use this technique for smaller pieces as I'm able to add smaller details with the materials I use.

My portrait works have travelled across the world and found homes with a wide range of clients. Some of my most notable commissions come from the Consulate General of Indonesia and Salam Indonesia, who often request portraits to commemorate the departure of beloved staff members. I’ve also created many pieces for independent buyers, often as heartfelt gifts or keepsakes to honour the people they love.
I also enjoy donating my work from time to time, sharing art as a way to bring joy to the people who mean the most to me.
